The British Indian Ocean Territories were established from parts of the Outer Seychelles and Mauritius on November 8, 1965. On June 29th 1976, the former Seychelles territories were returned to Seychelles. The former Mauritius territories remain part of the British Indian Ocean Territories and are an overseas territory of the United Kingdom.

The United States leases the island of Diego Garcia.
