Bhopal, known as The City of Lakes, is the capital of Madhya Pradesh state, with
a population of approximately 1,5 million.
The two lakes of Bhopal still dominate the city, which
today presents a multi-faceted profile; the old city with its marketplaces and
fine old mosques and palaces still bears the aristocratic imprint of its former
rulers; equally impressive is the new city with its verdant, exquisitely laid
out parks and gardens, broad avenues and streamlined modern edifices.
One of the main and unfortunate events in the recent
history of Bhopal is the disaster took place on December 3, 1984. A Union
Carbide plant in Bhopal leaked 40 tons of toxic gas, killing more than 3.000
people outright and affecting hundreds of thousands.
